What Realized Drawdown Can—and Cannot—Tell You

Drawdown is a path-dependent measure. The records you include determine what it means.

Follow the equity path

Realized drawdown measures declines from a prior peak in cumulative closed-trade results. Starting at zero, add each known net result in time order. Track the running peak and the largest gap below it.

Closed trades are not the whole account

An account may experience a large unrealized loss before closing a position at a small loss. A journal containing only completed trades will miss that intratrade decline. Label this measurement realized drawdown rather than full account risk.

Match the firm’s definition

A prop account may use intraday trailing equity, end-of-day values or a fixed floor. The same trade sequence can interact differently with each rule. Read the actual agreement and identify whether unrealized gains move the floor.

Use the number to ask better questions

Compare periods with similar record quality. Investigate clusters of losses, changes in position size and whether a strategy’s adverse periods fit your tolerance. A historical maximum is not a promise that future drawdown cannot be larger.

Explore configurable account rules with a clear understanding of the data limits.
